SOME DETAILS OF THE STRUCTURE OF The church is built in the simple Gothic
style with plaster-covered brickwork in the walls and pillars, and a tiled roof
supported by teak timbers. The floor is tiled with a marble-paved sanctuary
approached by three marble steps. The nave and choir are flanked by six
pillars and beyond these are north and south aisles. The organ is at the east
end of the north aisle and the vestry in a corresponding position in the
south aisle. Teak screening separates them from the main body of the church
and forms a choir seating 24 choristers and two clergy. Each aisle has seven double doors in its
walls and large double doors open at the west end on to a porch formed by the
tower, which is 19 feet square and 52 feet high. The nave, which includes the choir, is 84
feet long with a roof rising to 45 feet; with the aisles, the width is 52
feet. An arch, 24 feet high by 19 feet wide,
spans the entrance to the sanctuary, which is an apse 21 feet deep by 22 feet
wide. It contains a large three-lighted window over the altar with two other
small windows on either side. In the west wall a rose window opens into
the tower and two lancet windows on either side. Seven clerestory windows
overlook each aisle and the tower has a window in each of its three free
walls. The church has seating for 140 persons in
the congregation, with the choir and clergy in addition. Using the aisles and
other space, as many as 450 persons can be seated in the church. |
