The Protestant Cemetery Bangkok

During the reign of King Rama IV many foreigners who were Protestant Christians came to Siam, as the country was then known. Some of them died there. This led to the need for a burial site and HM King Rama IV graciously donated an area of land near the Chao Phya River for this purpose. It became known as the Protestant Cemetery.

Protestant CemeteryThe Cemetery contains the graves of Christians (and Jews) of many nationalities and walks of life, such as merchants, missionaries, traders, diplomats, seamen and engineers, to name but a few. Many had important roles in the development of Thailand and became officials in the Thai Government: these included Dr Dan Beach Bradley, a pioneer of modern medical practice as well as printing and newspaper publishing, and John Bush, Admiral in the Siamese Navy, who managed and renovated the port to international standards. Admiral Bush received the noble rank of Phraya Wisit Sakhondit. Here also lies Mr Henry Alabaster, the founder of the Savetsila (เศวตศิลา) family, who helped to plan the Thai postal system and was a key figure in surveys for the construction of a number of major roads in Bangkok, including Charoen Krung Road.

Bangkok Protestant Cemetery is administered by the Protestant Cemetery Committee and is maintained entirely by voluntary contributions. Enquiries to:
